Family Resource Recommendation

This week, I wanted to highlight a resource for you. This resource is particularly for family members of individuals with eating disorders. So much focus goes on the individual with the eating disorder, leaving the family in the shadows. They are often significantly impacted.

Becky Henry offers many resources for you. Check out her website.

She has online support groups. You are even allowed to attend one group per month for free. And if you want to attend more, it is only about $40 per month. She has a HUG toolkit that is a great value, including several resources. As I am writing this, she’s offering a discount due to the pandemic. But it is a great value even without the discount.

If you have a loved one dealing with an eating disorder, do not neglect your own support needs. If you can get some individual counseling, that would be ideal. In addition to that, or if you are unable to get your own, I highly recommend the resources here with Becky Henry’s work.

NEDA

As I write this, it is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.  One of the best resources I know of to support you in your understanding of eating disorders and the issues around them is NEDA, or National Eating Disorders Association.  Their website is great.  They offer ways to learn, ways to get involved, and ways to get help and support.

They are also active during weeks like this one, as well as Weight Stigma Awareness Week, and No Diet Day.  It is a great organization for those in recovery, as well as parents and loved ones of those in recovery.  I wanted to take a moment to highlight this resource again, as I had back in 2017.

Mindfulness Resource

I know my clients and friends think I am a broken record when I am continually asking if they meditate or have a mindfulness practice. But the research has shown for decades now that there are multitudes of benefits to meditating and mindfulness. Research continues to come out regularly, showing physical and mental benefits. So, what are you waiting for?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a class that I have had my eye on for a while. I have considered taking a course for several years now, but I had not followed through for various reasons. I learned that this class is offered online and for free, so my husband and I took this class over the last couple of months. True learning comes in practicing, and that is a huge component of this class. Check out this resource and let me know what you think!

A Must Read

When this book came out last year, I had to get it.  Christy Harrison is well known in the world of recovery from disordered eating.  She has a great podcast.  She is a trusted source for figuring out how to live in a world where diet culture is the norm.  I took my time reading it.  I wanted to absorb the information.  And honestly, I would read it in chunks then get spitting mad.  We NEED to get mad, friends!  Diet culture is a liar….and as Christy so poignantly explains, a thief.  A thief of our time, our money, and our well-being!

Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size are amazing books.  If you have not read them, put them on your reading list.  They are the pioneers and the staples in….well….intuitive eating and pursuing health at every size.  Anit-Diet is up there on the list of reads….it’s neck and neck with quality.  It is researched and well written.  It is a must-read!

I am one of those who would loves to consume books.  I love printed books, Kindle versions, and audible.  I got the printed book and was reading it (also marking it with highlighters and post-it notes) when one of my kitties threw up a hairball on it, actually destroying it.  I got the book on Kindle and finished reading it electronically.  But..I needed that hard copy again so I can mark it up as a reference.  So, I got it and have started using it for my own reference, for reference when working with clients, and….it will be used for reference when I get this dissertation going.
