Decluttering, Anti-Diet Style

Okay, y’all, it is January. Time to do some decluttering. If you are on this journey away from diet culture, even if you are just toying with the idea, let me offer you three decluttering ideas. I hear decluttering is a focus for some people this month….let’s declutter anti-diet syle.

  1. Here is a simple and quick thing to declutter—your scale. The number on the scale means nothing. NOTHING. How many times have you been having a good day until you look at the number? And then your day turns bad because of some story that you have been telling yourself about what that number needs to be. The number means nothing. There are lies about that number. I want to keep this a little simple for now. It does not serve you to have a scale. So, declutter it. Donate it or throw it out (or smash it with a hammer, friend, I know some have done this and report it feels ah-mazing).
  2. The next thing to declutter is clothes that don’t fit you or that aren’t comfortable. Or that you don’t love wearing. Many folks out there who have a history of dieting or disordered eating are hanging onto clothes that are too small, hoping that they’ll lose weight. Open up space in your closet and donate those clothes. If you don’t love wearing it or it doesn’t feel right, let it go. (Our size does fluctuate up and down some, and it is okay to have a little bit of flexibility here as you get to know and accept your changing body). Be reasonable with yourself.
  3. The last thing to declutter is your social media feed. Unfollow diet accounts or “fitspo.” Clean up your feed. You can do this all at once and/or have it as an ongoing mindset. It is quick and easy to unfollow (and block if needed) an account. Take some time and dig into who you are following (you might find some anti-diet folks to follow while you are at it). Last year (2020), I tried to see if there was one person to unfollow or unfriend a day….or unsubscribe from a newsletter that was no longer an interest.  My thought was it took me less than a minute to do this, and if I were consistent all year long, I would unfollow more than 350 things (spoiler alert, I was only consistent until about March—then so many things went out the window).

Those are just three things to declutter. Even if you are only dabbling with anti-diet ideas, these three can benefit you and your mental health regardless. I mean, if you are wearing clothes you don’t like or aren’t comfortable….or if you are following social media accounts that make you feel gross….you’ll feel better decluttering. And the scale, well….that may need more of its own blog post one day, but at least put it up, so you don’t see it all the time!

Reflecting on the Year

It is getting toward the end of the year.  I like to make a practice of looking over my year and reflecting on accomplishments.  I shoot for 25 in a year.  That might seem like a lot!  Start on your list and see.  It might be surprising how many accomplishments you have and don’t give yourself credit for.  Do NOT leave out things….this is your list.  If you ask yourself, “Does it count if…?”  The answer is YES, it counts!

You can add this list to your journal.  Don’t have a journal?  Maybe it’s time to start one!  Or if you want to open up a Word document on your computer or a notes section on your phone.  Whatever works for you and in your style.  Since the year isn’t completed yet, I am starting my list and seeing how many I can find.  I can add to it over the next month as we finish out the year.

We so often overlook the things in our life that we could be grateful for, as well as our accomplishments (small to large)!  You can even go beyond the 25 or if you’d rather have a shorter list….or how about an ongoing list that you add to?!

Walk-Up Songs

Do you have a walk-up song? At baseball games, when a player walks up to bat, they play over the loudspeakers a snippet of a song hand-picked by the player. You can call it a theme song if you like, or a song that represents you. It could also change over time! I had a client recently introduce me to the song “Second Wind” by Kelly Clarkson. It seems like a pretty good walk-up song.

A couple of years ago, I was tasked with determining a walk-up song for myself. I am married to a baseball fan, so I enlisted his support. We tossed around a couple of Katy Perry songs. At the time, I believe I picked “Roar.” Then a few months back, my husband told me I had a new walk-up for me. Sadly, I didn’t listen close enough. I heard him, but I didn’t. But then I saw the video I’ve attached to this blog. It is so worth watching some of the backstory of this performance, that was just a rehearsal. I showed this video to my hubby, and he said, “I told you about that song. That’s the song I told you would be your new walk-up song. I’ll take it!!!

Do you have a walk-up song? I would LOVE to hear yours!

Are You a Murderino?

When I was a kid, my parents had a coffee table book that was about true crime. I remember reading that book and believing I had to be such a weirdo to be reading out true crime. But then I saw the entire true crime section at bookstores and libraries…..I then decided that I must not be alone.

Today we have entire shows and channels devoted to true crime….and even podcasts. One of the first podcasts I listened to was Serial, which was abo you guessed it….a true crime story. Honestly, at least lately, I have to know my limits. There have been shows and podcasts that stuck with me and “freaked” me out. When that happens, I take a break from all things “murder-y” and proceed carefully when I choose to watch one. Enter My Favorite Murder. Are you a murderino? (A name dubbed by the podcasters for those obsessed with murder, as well as listeners to their show.) This is a podcast that is somehow both a comedy and a true-crime podcast at the same time. In this arena, I don’t often have a story lingering in my head in the middle of the night, keeping me awake. I recently read their book, Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered, and here are five things I love about Georgia and Karen….and three things that you might want to consider before reading and/or listening to their podcast.

  1.  Georgia and Karen are down to earth. While their “humble beginnings” in the entertainment industry might not look like yours or mine. Karen was a comedy writer for shows. Georgia had a cooking and travel channel. But really, they are just two friends who connected in their interest in talking about true crime and decided to do a podcast.
  2. Georgia and Karen are also Brené Brown fangirls. I love that within their story of meeting, they were talking about reading Daring Greatly, and their attempts at being authentic within their podcast. Being a fangirl myself, I love finding others who are trying to soak up Brené’s wisdom.
  3. Georgia and Karen are proponents of going to therapy. They talk openly about going to a therapist. Healthy people have therapists, friends. Let’s get rid of the stigma about going to a therapist and get ourselves some time on the couch.
  4. Georgia and Karen own up to their mistakes on the reg. They often have a segment in each of their podcasts, giving updates and correcting mistakes from previous podcasts. This is not just about fact-checking; it gives us all permission to mess up…to be human.
  5. Georgia and Karen are victim advocates. They aren’t just glorifying the criminal. They seem to genuinely connect with the victims and find a balance between learning some safety measures from murder stories and pushing against the patriarchy that sometimes lays the blame on the victim and downplays the roles of the perpetrator.

And just a few things to consider before jumping into being a murderino yourself and listening to their podcast.

  1. They do talk about murder and gruesome, gritty stuff. Not everyone will want to listen to this discussion.
  2. They cuss quite a bit. This doesn’t bother me in the least, but if you would rather not listen to some swear words woven throughout, you might want to pass on this podcast.
  3. Some of their discussion is for sure more adult-themed, not too intense or graphic, but still something for the listener/reader to consider.
