The 5NP Auricular Acupuncture Protocol: Small Needles, Potentially Big Benefits
This past May, I was able to have a special ear acupuncture technique done on me. I was with a group of several other therapists, learning that this technique has been around a while, but the law changed in Texas recently opening up the tool to include treating emotional and physical stress and trauma, and this allows mental health professionals to practice this within their scope of practice.
‘Sign me up,’ was my immediate reaction! Another tool that could help my clients reduce stress sounds like a win-win for me. I am excited to say that I completed the training this past weekend. I am in the process of completing the supervised portion, where I complete several volunteer’s ears and get my technique approved by my trainer. Once I complete the process, I will be eligible for Texas certification.

TL, DR version: 5NP stands for 5-needle-protocol. There are 5 places in the ear that a tiny, sterile needle is placed that promotes a feeling of peace and well-being. It’s been around for a while (since the 1970’s) helping with recovery from addiction. The law was expanded to include other mental health benefits in September of 2023. The experience can last 15-45 minutes and experiences vary from subtle to profound, many noticing a sense of peace and calm right away. 5NP (Five-Needle Protocol) auricular acupuncture stands out as a powerful method for supporting overall well-being, particularly in the realms of stress reduction, addiction recovery, and mental health.
5NP auricular acupuncture is a specific protocol that involves placing five needles at precise points on the outer ear. This technique is rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which posits that the ear is a microsystem that reflects the entire body. By stimulating specific points on the ear, practitioners believe they can influence corresponding parts of the body and promote healing.
The five points targeted in 5NP auricular acupuncture are:
Sympathetic Point: Calms the nervous system and helps the body achieve balance.
Shen Men (Spirit Gate): Reduces anxiety, stress, and emotional pain while promoting relaxation.
Kidney Point: Supports healing of the kidneys and addresses fears and willpower issues.
Liver Point: Helps detoxify the body and manage anger or aggression.
Lung Point: Aids in respiratory function and emotional processing, particularly grief.
The 5NP protocol is known for its versatility and effectiveness in various therapeutic contexts. Some of the most notable benefits include
Stress Reduction and Relaxation
One of the most immediate effects of 5NP auricular acupuncture is its ability to induce deep relaxation. The Shen Men and Sympathetic points, in particular, help calm the mind and reduce the physical symptoms of stress. This can be incredibly beneficial for those dealing with chronic stress or anxiety, as it offers a non-pharmacological way to soothe the nervous system.
Enhancing Emotional Well-being
By addressing key emotional points such as Shen Men, Kidney, Liver, and Lung, 5NP ear acupuncture can help individuals process and release pent-up emotions. Whether dealing with grief, anger, or fear, this technique offers a gentle way to bring emotional balance and improve overall mental health.
The Experience of 5NP Auricular Acupuncture
A typical 5NP auricular acupuncture session can last 15-45 minutes. A practitioner will insert five clean, sterile needles into the designated points on the ear, where they will remain for the duration of the session. Most people report feeling a sense of calm and relaxation during and after the treatment. Some may experience a slight sensation at the needle insertion points, but this is generally mild and short-lived.
Final Thoughts
5NP auricular acupuncture offers a unique and holistic approach to healing that taps into the body’s natural ability to restore balance. Whether you’re seeking support for stress management, addiction recovery, or emotional well-being, this protocol provides a gentle yet powerful pathway to wellness. As with any healing practice, it’s important to work with a trained and experienced practitioner to ensure the best possible outcomes.
